Region: | Eastern Cape, South Africa |
Installed By: | Kestrel Renewable Energy |
Purpose: | “reverse metering” in the billing of electricity |
The Nelson Mandela Municipality was the first to allow “reverse metering” in the billing of electricity. The reverse metering system allows the owners to feed their own energy into the grid and use it to the maximum of their own disposal. This allows the Nelson Mandela Bay residents to generate their own electricity to the maximum of 100kw system size. The system that was installed at the farm of Mr Knott was Kestrel’s first SSEG (Small Scale Embedded Generation) system.
The system comprised 16 x 250 watt solar panels and a 5 kW Grid Tie inventor. The solar panels generate around 24000 watt/hours per day that is feedback on the grid. The power is either used by the customer or return to grid. The energy that is return to grid caused the electricity meter to reverse and build up credit that is used at night or in high demand periods. Over the period of one month (November to December) Mr Knott has already built up and exceptional amount of electricity.
