Did you know that more than three million people in South Africa lack access to basic water supplies?
According to recent studies conducted in water accessibility surveys, 74% of people residing in rural areas are dependent on the underground supply of water, i.e.: pumps and local wells. Due to a lack of infrastructure, population growth and immigration 19% of South Africans do not have access to a consistent water supply in rural areas.
This reality does not only exist in rural communities. 26% of schools and 45% of clinics lack access to the basic water supply as well.
Kestrel offers a renewable energy-driven solution referred to as a ‘water pumping solution’ to help deliver where it matters most and has helped numerous schools and rural communities gain access to the water that they deserve.
Kestrel’s water pumping solution is able to deliver up to 3,600 litres per hour through the use of a water pumping system, water pump and Kestrel’s patented micro-wind turbine solution.
The micro-wind turbine generates power by means of the wind in the area which powers the water pump to deliver water where the community needs it. There is also hybrid water pumping solutions consisting of micro-wind turbines and solar panels.
Kestrel’s water delivery solution has proven to deliver twice the volume of a traditional mechanical windmill.
While traditional mechanical windmills are required to be positioned directly above a well in order to deliver the water source, Kestrel’s water pumping solution can be placed where wind resources are maximised in the area.
Operates over a long distance: As explained above, Kestrel’s micro-wind turbines are placed where wind generation is optimal. This can be up to a large distance of 280m away where the system will continue to deliver up to 3,600 litres per hour at a rate of 3m/s.
Adaptable to your windmill tower: Not only does Kestrel’s micro-wind turbine not have to be positioned directly above the water source, but your existing mechanical windmill can also be adapted to work with Kestrel’s renewable energy setup.
Low maintenance: Before one of our micro-wind turbines leaves the factory, they undergo extensive and careful testing to ensure that the units will run reliably and perform optimally over a number of years.
Alternative setups: While Kestrel does offer turnkey solutions we are also prepared to alter our solutions to fit the individual needs of the client, community or business. Our water pumping solutions do not require only wind turbines but can be combined with solar panels to form a hybrid solution.
Cost-effective and versatile: Kestrel’s water pumping solution is highly versatile and strongly recommended for areas where grid electricity is unavailable or unstable.
Kestrel has successfully installed more than 400 water pumping solutions nationally and internationally. Below are some case studies from our completed projects.

Alice – Eastern Cape
In 2015, Kestrel installed a water pumping solution inside the rural community of Alice, located just outside of King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape. By converting wind power generated by our wind turbines, the water pump provides water to a tank which then supplies water to the taps via a gravity feed.
The water is used for drinking water by the nearby school and is the only running water in the village. The water is also used to water the vegetable garden which forms a part of the school’s feeding scheme.

Ngutyana – KwaZulu-Natal
In 2019, Kestrel undertook a similar project for the rural community of Ngtyana based within KwaZulu-Natal. Prior to the installation, locals would have to walk kilometres to collect water.
Kestrel installed a 1kW e300i wind turbine which powered a Grundfos submersible water pump to pump the water out of a borehole and into an elevated water tank. Using gravity feeds, the water is fed to taps within the community.

Upper Nqgunqgu JSS – Eastern Cape
In 2016, Kestrel installed a water pumping solution for a local primary school in the Coffee Bay area, Eastern Cape. The school was in desperate need of water and, after the system was implemented, the school is now receiving running water from 800m away.
