Green Ways to Spend your 67 Minutes this Mandela Day

18 July 2022

Today we commemorate our former president Nelson Mandela for his contributions to South Africa and the world. This prestigious day is celebrated across the globe to shine a light on the legacy Madiba left behind and to renew the values that he stood for.

With climate change and global warming on the increase, today is the perfect opportunity to spend your 67 Minutes giving back to the environment to make your community a cleaner and greener space to live in for everyone.

Here are some simple and effective ways to spend your 67 minutes this Nelson Mandela Day:

1. Planting Trees

With deforestation and development leading to the rapid decline of natural forests and woodlands, planting trees during your 67 minutes is a great way to help the community and the environment.

Deforestation does not only affect oxygen levels but a myriad of other factors including animals and surrounding ecosystems. Without trees, there is no shelter or living area for many of the wildlife and insects that live and maintain the balance in these ecosystems.

2. Beach Cleanup

The amount of plastic that is in the ocean increases by the day wreaking havoc on both plant life and marine animals that ingest the plastic waste.

Head out to the local beach this Mandela Day with a group of family and friends and pick up litter for the upcoming 67 minutes to alleviate the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean.

To make a larger impact - you can also create an event on Facebook to encourage more members of the local community to attend the cleanup.

3. Recycling Zone

Do some home spring cleaning and sort out all the paper, plastics, glass and cardboard that you want to recycle into separate containers. Find a recycle drop-off zone in your area that will accept the materials for recycling.

This is also a group community or neighbourhood project to start on social media. Rope in the neighbours, create a large-scale recycling effort and help to make a larger difference.

Maybe this is something that the neighbourhood will be interested in continuing in the future!

4. Donate to an Organisation

Sometimes finding even a minute to spare in a busy day can seem like an impossibility. That being said, if you are too busy to go to a litter cleanup or help out with recycling for your 67 Minutes this year, then you can also donate money to a local environmental organisation.

There are plenty of non-profit organisations that help with environmental efforts. Do some research and find a cause that you are happy to contribute to. And, if you still want to contribute, then you can always do your 67 minutes for the environment on another day!

5. Volunteer at an Organisation

If you prefer to get involved in other aspects of volunteering, then consider helping out at a local soup kitchen or even an animal organisation like the SPCA.

These organisations always welcome the assistance of community members. If you do not want to help with handing out food or helping to clean the animal shelters, then there are always alternatives like organising a collection on behalf of these organisations.

Get in contact with an organisation near you and find out what type of collection will benefit them the most for your 67 minutes.
