On May 25th, Africa Day provides us with a platform to celebrate the achievements and cultural heritage of the African continent. It is a time to showcase the enormous potential that exists in Africa, in terms of both culture and economy.
The African Union (AU) is an organisation that was established in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1963. Every year on May 25th, the AU celebrates "Africa Day" to promote an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa that is driven by its people and represents a dynamic force in the global arena. The founding members of the AU had a noble vision of creating a united Africa, at peace with itself and representing a dynamic force in the world arena. They fought tirelessly against colonialism and eventually succeeded in securing independence for most African countries in the 50s and 60s. This was a great victory for the continent. The AU continues to play an essential role in promoting peace, stability, and development in Africa.
South Africa became a member of the Organisation of African Unity on June 6th, 1994, following the end of Apartheid and the general election held in April of the same year. This happened under the leadership of Nelson Mandela. Ever since South Africa has remained an active state member of the organisation. Interestingly, the African Union (which succeeded the OAU) was launched in Durban, South Africa in July 2002.
UNESCO and the African Union have taken a significant step towards improving access to quality education across the continent by declaring 2024 as the "Year of Education." The theme for the year, "Educate an African fit for the 21st century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa," highlights the importance of creating robust education systems that can support lifelong learning for all.
This initiative, which was decided during UNESCO’s 36th Ordinary Session in February 2023, is a crucial step towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) and increasing investments in education policies that will benefit the African population. The focus on Education for the year provides an opportunity for constructive discussions on how to improve access to quality education across Africa and address the challenges faced by the continent.
Africa Day is celebrated by bringing people together to showcase the diverse cultural heritage of the African continent. This day provides a platform for various organisations, communities, and investors to celebrate and promote African foods, art, music, literature and culture. The upcoming online conference hosted by the AU in 2024 will feature influential speakers, state officials, and investors who will address the theme of resilient, inclusive and relevant education systems in Africa. This event will foster constructive dialogue, promote cooperation, and encourage investment to further the growth and development of Africa.
