Stateside student to power up Addo school

Local business, Kestrel Renewable Energy (Kestrel), has an international visitor. Fifth former, Joe Yates from the USA is spending three weeks installing a wind turbine at Vusumzi School, as well as assisting in renovations andteach pupils at the Addo township school.

On his adventure Joe said: "The turbine will be a huge step forward for the school, as it will give teachers and pupils access to things we ordinarily take for granted. I hope that it will become a source of pride for the community as well as a resource that will be of great use to the people there.

“I'm very excited for the project and would love to see more turbines follow, just as the use of wind turbines has expanded in my home town."

From New England, America, Joe won a local Rhode Island General Treasurer's Young Leader Award for entrepreneurship and outstanding achievement in maths, economics and business-related classes.He was honored for his planned project here in Port Elizabeth and was awarded the Haney Fellowship in order for him to carryout his three-weeks in the friendly city.

Leon Gouws, Director or Kestrel added: “It is impressive to see such talent coming through the US schooling system, and that our rural schools will benefit from the vision, energy and talent that Joe is bringing. It will also be a huge education for Joe to see how a manufacturing business such as Kestrel operates and the need for engineering minds to bring new thinking to the industry.”
