Oil Tycoon Embraces Wind Power

Date: 22 May 2008

On Monday, May 19, billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens announced his decision to invest a massive fortune in a wind power project in Texas. In an interview with CNN, Pickens outlined his multi-billion-dollar commitment to what will mostly likely become the world's largest wind farm, capable of producing enough electricity to power 1.3 million homes.

En-route to a wind array with a 4,000-megawatt output, petrol industry's most recognized entrepreneur has already put in an order for more than 600 turbines made by GE. "We start receiving those turbines in mid 2010," he told CNN's Ali Velshi. "We will have the total 4,000 megawatts finished by the end of 2015. That power will go into a transmission line that will tie into the Electric Reliability Council of Texas system in the state of Texas, and it will be transmitted downstate." Pickens also emphasized the great importance of the locale, explaining its safety benefits as well as the advantage of a wind corridor that spans from Pampa, Texas all the way to the Canadian border.

When asked whether he is concerned with the NIMBY backlash, likely to arise from the neighboring towns, the oilman countered: "That's right. And it's very clear, these are my neighbors. And they want them. It generates income for them."
